3rd – 12th Feb 2013 : Ruwenzori

The Rwenzoris is a world heritage site know historically as the Mountains of the Moon. The park has a well developed facilities but is relatively lightly used. It is a great wilderness experience. The main summits have glaciers and the walking involves entry level glacier traverses with guides. Crampons and ice axes are used but no special skills are required. The parties are roped. These are principally all just safety measures for what is essential high altitude walking. This trip is accessible to anyone with a good level of physical fitnesses. The package includes guides and two porters per person. All that hikers need to carry is a day pack.

This meet will be an 8 day hike in the Rwenzoris that will include to peaks. The basic hike is the ‘central circuit’ which goes through several high passes, but is essentially a valley circuit. There is the opportunity to climb several peaks as day trips off the circuit. I have attached the RMS route description which gives a good idea of huts and trails. Please ignore the prices on the flyer as they are out of date. Crampons, ice axes, harnesses and other gear can be rented at the park. The guides will provide the ropes, etc.

The trip will meet mid morning in Kampala on Feb 3 to take a minibus to Kasese and start the hike on Feb 4.

Four of those already signed up did Margherita, the highest peak on Mt Stanley, last year. We will probably split into two groups so that new comers can do Margherita and others can do one of the other peaks on Mt Stanley (Savoia or Elizabeht which are also approached form the main ridge these days). Last year we also did Mt Speke, so we will look at doing another peak this year as well. One option is the portal peaks which would involve some climbing (optional). Other common peaks are Mt. Baker and Mt. Luigi di Savoi.

I have attached a map and photo from the web, but you can see lots of nice images just by googling Mount Stanley.

The prices quoted for the trip are: I think we can negotiate down the transfer from Kampala to Kasese or make alternative arrangements.
