July 31st – Slideshow – Dr.Johannes Refisch of the Great Apes Survival Partnership (GRASP) will discuss his experiences in gorilla conservation, which started in 1991 with field work in Kahuzi-Biega, Eastern DR Congo. This came to an abrupt end when DR Congo slipped into a first period of instability and donors decided collectively to pull out of DRC. Since then, Johannes has been back to the region many times and is still impressed by the incredible beauty, the people and the landscape. The Central African rift has everything one can dream of, some of the most endangered species such as the mountain gorilla, chimpanzee, Congo peacock, Okapi, forest elephant, but also active volcanoes and steep mountains with afro-alpine vegetation. This talk is not only about conservation work, it will also show the beauty of the Central African forest, its biodiversity, and its people, who unfortunately have undergone very difficult periods where any effort in making  a living was taken by insecurity and violence
