17th March : Maxidash

For uninitiated, the “Maxi-Dash” is an annual event for the rock climbers of the Club and for ‘climbing guests’ who would wish to participate. The idea is to gather as many points as possible by climbing set climbs (listed below) at five (5) different crags around Nairobi. These are Lukenya, Embaribal, Frog, Ndeiya & Hell’s Gate Nat’l Park (OK, Hell’s Gate is not quite near Nairobi)! During the climbing, all teams should be self sufficient in terms of water, food, communication and transportation. Although the action during the daylight hours is focused on the climbers, the weekend is also a Club ‘meet’ for camping at Hell’s Gate. At the end of the climbing on Saturday evening, we gather at a campground in the Park. Prizes will be awarded to the top teams. All MCK members and guests are invited to bring drinks, meat and other food and convene round the fire to recount tales of the day.

18th – 19th February 2012 : Lukenya Climbing and Camping

We have a weekend of climbing and camping coming up at Lukenya on Saturday February 18th and Sunday February 19th with overnight camping at the summit on the night of the 18th.

The 18th will be a climbing practice and training day starting from 9:30 AM. We foresee two groups:

  • A beginners climbing area with top ropes set up for those with no experience or who are very new to climbing to get some experience.
  • A trad climbing group for those new to traditional lead climbing involving the placing of protect and building of anchors. For this group we will arrange for one or two experienced climbers to join in the climbing to provide guidance and tips.

At the end of the day, we will adjourn to the summit camping area. Those interested in camping will need to form small groups and arrange, tents, food and cooking. We will arrange for two security personnel and the cost of security will need to be shared among those camping.

On Sunday the 19th, the Mini-dash will be held. See attachement.

If you are just planning to come for either or both of the day events (not camp) you should be prepared with lots of water, a picnic lunch, hats, sunscreen, etc. For the training day, we will bring all the shoes, harasses, helmets, ropes, etc needed. The training day is free for members and 400 Ksh for non-members. Personal gear (harnesses, shoes and helmet or any combination thereof) are rented at one charge of 300 Ksh for the weekend per person.
