MCK members, Lindsay Bingaman and Caroline Marohasy, summited Mt. Kenya’s Point Lenana via the Chogoria Route in just two days this past July, without guides or porters. Lindsay wrote about the trip beta, shenanigans they got into, and other insights in a three-part blog post, with the hope that their story will inspire other women to pursue their outdoor adventure goals, and / or provide advice to those looking to follow a similar route on Mt. Kenya. Read their amazing story here:

Hallo MCK! I was on Mount Kenya when two women made the first all-female ascent of Nelion. I was climbing Batian with a mate (both from University of Cape Town). They waited for us on Nelion and then the 4 of us went down together. Got back to the hut at about midnight!
One of the girls was Diane Standring. I cannot for the life of me remember the name of the other girl but she was Burmese I think. Diane S was a teacher in Nairobi
This was in January 1965…

Hi Greg,
Thanks for the comment! Always great to read a bit of history of the mountains in Kenya. Did some people from your party also make a first ascent on Pt John that trip? I think I’ve seen at least one FA by University of Cape Town students in the guidebook – must have been an adventure!
All the best,
Ian – MCK Chair
